With the days of his famous discoveries behind him, he is now looking for common fossils to sell to tourists to feed himself and his ailing mother. When a wealthy visitor entrusts Mary to his wife Charlotte Murchison (Saoirse Ronan), he is unable to turn down his offer. Proud and enthusiastic about her work, Mary initially encounters her unwanted guests, but despite the distance between their social class and personality, a strong bond begins to grow and forces the two women to determine the true nature of their relationship.
